The Toronto Hospital for Sick Kids Creates Loving Families

Here is my Story:

Hi my name is Christy,
This is a story about my brother and "The Hospital for Sick Kids" in Toronto, ON, Canada. I was 11 my brother was 4. He developed an "undiagnosed intercranial pressure". We were all scared. The doctors told it was very rare, and since the cause was unknown-difficult to treat. They did many tests that frightened him. He was so little! I remember how brave and yet terrified he was about something called a "Spinal Tap". They drained fluid from his spinal cord, I think to analyze it. One night my mother couldn't stay. She had to care for my younger sister and make some arrangements at home. The nurses helped me pull some cushions off of a waiting room chair, and we got a sheet and made a little bed for me to sleep over and spend the night beside my brother (even though child siblings weren't supposed to stay the night). I will never forget that night. I felt so proud to be able to stay, knowing I was trusted to keep an eye on my little brother. I firmly believe that that moment changed something in our lives. As I have always felt a special closeness and protectiveness towards this brother, and am today applying to Medical School. I believe that The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, while dealing with all of the chaos and trauma of childhood injury and sickness, also somehow manage to build stronger loving families. Where do they find the time? I don't know. All I do know is that they are amazing people--every staff member there is a treasure. I cannot imagine having to go through that experience with any other Hospital in the world!
Thank you, Toronto Hospital for Sick Kids - You're the best!
Love, Christy.
