Elder Care

Posted by: Jen Brown From: Waterloo, ON
Here is my Story:
My Dad suffered a massive stroke 4 years ago, and has been living in a nursing home ever since.

It is located in the tiny farming community of Tavistock, Ontario.

The facility is run mainly by Mennonite women from around the area, and it is a very homey and non-hospital environment.

My story salutes the directors and nurses that make it possible for my family to take my Dad home once a month.

As far as I know, it is not generally encouraged to remove someone needing such profound care from a facility, and for inexperienced family members to care for them at home.

Once someone ends up in a nursing home, they seem to just stay there, rooted - they never leave.

The nurses have been very encouraging about our excursions home.

They know that we might find some things hard to do, or that there is even the possibility that something might happen where Dad needs medical attention. But my Dad is near the end of his life, and along with us, the medical staff at this facility know that is it more important for Dad to have meaningful times with us.

Yes, he could suffer another stroke at home with us, and we wouldn't be able to do anything, but at least he's not wasting away, already half dead from boredom and lonliness.
